Canadian Preparation H

Canadian Preparation H

Not too long ago I read something about how professional makeup artists sometimes use the hemorrhoid cream Preparation H on their clients to reduce puffiness, bags under the eyes, wrinkles, and other undesirable signs of aging. I was astounded, but when I read further they explained that Preparation H was an anti-inflammatory, and worked great on facial skin. Sounded reasonable to me I guess.

Then a case of selective perception kicked in, and I started seeing references to it everywhere! Apparently this has been known for years by people in the beauty biz, and movie stars and such like have been using it forever. However, I’ve never heard first hand of anyone using it, or the kinds of results they got. It’s always been that someone they know used it, or they heard about it.

The story gets a little complicated because it seems that there are TWO versions of Preparation H out there. One is made in Canada and supposedly is the original formula that contains shark liver oil and LYCD - Live Yeast Cell Derivative. These ingredients, referred to as Bio-Dyne, are said to contain healing properties for dry or cracked skin as well as reducing swelling on eye bags. The Preparation H available in the US doesn’t have these ingredients, instead relying on an astringent called phenylepherine to reduce swelling.  According to the manufacturer of the Canadian product, the phenylepherine may reduce swelling temporarily, but as a vasoconstrictor will have a pronounced rebound effect.

The Canadian Preparation H product IS available here in the US on eBay. There is also a product called Natural Faces that seems to have the same ingredients but in a more cosmetically appealing package. Its also more expensive.

Well, if anyone has tried these products and wants to share your experiences, please feel free to post your comments! I just might give the Canadian Prep H product a try. I’m intrigued by the healing properties its supposed to have on skin - I have eczema on my hands and get painful cracks, and it can’t hurt to try it. And while I’m at it, dab a little on those bags under my eyes…
